(before you spend time collecting examples for this assignment, be sure to read the WARNINGS here! -- scroll down)
Collect examples of the following (cut and paste them to this form, or attach clippings or photocopies to a hardcopy of this form to be handed in). Include enough of the context (at least the sentence before and after) to make the meaning clear. (Document the source. It CANNOT be an English grammar text, handbook, or dictionary!):

Two different kinds of modal auxiliaries:

    1. a modal expressing probability
    2. a modal expressing advisability
    3. a modal expressing "politeness" (for this assignment, AVOID other conditional verbs and would)
For each : (see the example)
    I.Indicate the general meaning and time referred to
    II.Paraphrase the verb phrase without a modal (using other words like probably, maybe, necessary, good, mikstake, want, think, please ... ). Be sure to indicate what the true situation is/was, if we know it.

    YOU CAN KEEP RESUBMITTING THIS ASSINGMENT
    UNTIL YOU'VE SUCCESSFULLY IDENTIFIED TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF MODALS

EXAMPLE:

Enquirer staff members arrived on the scene outside Nicole's Brentwood home at about the same time as the Los Angeles coroner, and since then as many as 20 reporters have been running down everyone even ..
(from Time, January 9, 1995 )
modal of PROBABILITY
time = PAST
must have thought = past, logical conclusion

Because of what we know about National Enquirer editors, it is logical to think that they were probably very happy (in heaven) on June 13. (NOT contrary-to-fact; we think it is probably true.)
