Apartments
Many UIUC and IEI students prefer to live in an apartment so that they can cook their own meals. Some things you need to know about renting an apartment:
- Apartments Size
- Apartments range from efficiency apartments with a combined living room/bedroom (usually for one person) to apartments with one, two, three or four bedrooms.
- Furniture in Apartments
- Some apartments already have furniture (furnished) and some do not (unfurnished). Students renting furnished apartments will not need to buy furniture, but they usually have to buy cooking utensils, dishes, sheets, towels, pillows and blankets.
- Apartment Rent Prices
- The price of apartments vary widely depending on where the apartment is, if it is furnished, how many bedrooms it has and many other factors. To give you an idea, the average rent of a two bedroom apartment ranges from $500 to $900 dollars a month.
- Other Apartment Costs
- Students renting apartments may also have to pay for electricity, gas, telephone and water. For other apartments, these may be included in the rent.
- Lengths of Contract/Leases
- Many apartments require 9-month or 12-month leases for students who begin their study in August. For students coming in the Spring or Summer terms, it is possible to get shorter term leases.
- Individual Leases
- A few apartments offer one semester individual leases. An "individual lease" means that a student can sign a lease to rent one bedroom in an apartment that typically has 4 bedrooms. This is similar to a dormitory contract, in which the student is responsible for his or her rent. One apartment complex with this kind of lease is Atrium Apartments.
- Atrium Apartments are located at 1306 N. Lincoln Ave., Urbana, about 1 mile north of Green Street (the main street on the U of I campus) and is serviced by the public bus. These are 4 bedroom apartments with each bedroom having its own bathroom. The apartments are furnished and the rent includes gas, water, electricity etc. The apartment complex has a pool, fitness center, computer lab, hot tub and laundry facilities. Each student has an individual lease for his or her own room in the apartment. Atrium will help you find a roommate. For more information, check their website at http://www.atrium-apartments.com or contact them at atriumapt@yahoo.com .
- How to find an apartment
- Here are some websites that can give you information about the apartments that are available.
- The Apartment Finder: and the Rental Quicklist both of these are sponsored by the campus newspaper the Daily Illini.
- The U of I Community Rental page

Homestays
An alternative to residence halls and apartments is to live with a family in a Homestay Program. Remember, there is no typical U.S. family. Some families are single parents with children, older couples whose children are grown, or couples with small or no children. Some families may have pets, and you must understand and follow the family rules.
Homestay rates include two meals a day: breakfast and dinner. Students normally have their own bedroom and study space. Bathrooms are usually shared with the family. Transportation to school and home may be by bus. It is important to discuss transportation to the university when you apply for a placement. Please see the OvECS website (http://www.azhomestay.com) for cost and application or contact them via e-mail at homestay@ovecs.com. You can apply on-line at their website. The cost is approximately $600 for four weeks for room and meals plus a $180 initial placement fee.
