KING bio / holiday (Seattle Times, 1985)
One of the world's
advocates of non-violent social change strategies, Martin Luther King, Jr., synthesized ideas drawn from many
different cultural traditions.
Such status by a member of a country's racial minority is almost .
"I think it should be devoted to some activity which expresses love of our fellow person, or spiritual
recognition of some kind," says Dr. Donald G. Phelps, chancellor of Seattle Community College District, which
for the past 11 years has conducted a memorial service in King's honor on his birthday.
Although
portrayed as the pre-eminent black spokesperson, King did not mobilize mass protest activity during the first
five years after the Montgomery boycott ended.
His skepticism, however,
shaped his subsequent theological studies at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, and at Boston University
King's effectiveness in achieving his objectives was limited not merely by divisions among blacks,
however, but also by the
resistance he encountered from national political leaders.
On December 5, 1955, five days after Montgomery civil rights activist Rosa Parks refused to obey the
city's rules mandating segregation on buses, black residents launched a bus boycott and elected King as
president of the
Montgomery Improvement Association.
The 1961 "Freedom Rides," which sought to integrate southern transportation facilities, demonstrated
that neither King nor Kennedy could control the protest movement spearheaded by students.
The total was an
astronomical $8 billion for government and private sector combined.
The year, he toured
India, and increased his understanding of Gandhian non-violent strategies.
This creates an
historical contradiction for those that, like Virginia, are adding observance of King's birthday to that date as
well.
When President Reagan signed legislation creating the holiday in November 1983, it marked the end of a
persistent, lobbying effort
spanning the nation for 15 years.

"Promptly at 12:22 o'clock ....a rift was riven in the clouds and Br'er Groundhog sallied forth, casting a shadow which shot
through a sheen and sent a
shaft of effervescent and effulgent rays athwart the cities of Punxsutawney and Lindsey...."
During his years as President of the Inner Circle, there had to be major improvements to Gobbler's Knob

An immediate apology was demanded by the citizens of Punxsutawney.
As the 20th Century dawned, the States was experiencing a period of economic and industrial revolution.

Each Feb. 2nd his accounts became more and descriptive until all other weather forecasters, man or animal, were considered impostors!
Even if an adventurous groundhog-woodchuck should sally forth, the legend that winter will continue if he runs from his
shadow breaks down in the face of scientific evidence.
It all started out innocently enough when a Punxsutawneyite, recognizing the importance of Groundhog Lore presented the Royal
Groundhog Couple to the Los Angeles Griffith Park Zoo.
It has been called "one of the greatest publicity campaigns in history" and certainly, the borough of Punxsutawney would remain
to the outside world if not
for Punxsutawney Phil.
It is said that in the summer of 1887 a group of local hunters and gourmets held a groundhog hunt and
picnic and celebrated the event by barbecuing their game and washing it down with beer.
Many people travel to Punxsutawney to see the Punxsutawney that they saw in the movie. They wonder why it
seems so different but yet looks so similar. It's the magic of Hollywood! They may be that it is not exactly the same as they thought
is was going to be ...but few leave without having an enjoyable visit.
Since the Groundhog ascended the Weather Throne at Gobbler's Knob nearly a century ago, petty, pretenders with pediculosis have
pecked peevishly at his paramount position as premier prognosticator.
Smith took a role in
projecting Punxsutawney as a

of the snow and sleet and ice to follow.
The woodchuck-groundhog found in Illinois likes to live on the edge of forests, preferring land that is . .
There was a confrontation between Punxsutawney and Quarryville as to who had the rightful Groundhog. Erhard attended
a debate on the question and
was declared victorious.
To defend Punxsy's claim as the original home of the groundhog, he penned the message.
When Punxsutawney built an ultra-modern civic center in 1974, it included an , Groundhog Zoo.

"He's very in the community,"
Mank said, adding that LaDue has voted for "what's best for the community, not just his district."
One issue LaDue championed, despite opposition from other council members, was legislation allowing
tenants to repair potentially
safety code violations and to have the repair cost deducted from the rent.
She added, "He's thoughtful, intelligent and to fighting prejudice while many other people in
government are to promoting prejudice."
One lesson he learned was the importance of working with council members with viewpoints
Vincent Bellafiore, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University, has lived in
LaDue's district for 15 years and said LaDue is very about the neighborhoods.
"He's very much ," Bellafiore added.
"One of the most realities in
America is the concept of community," LaDue said.
Being a part of the glue that holds a community together is intrinsically , even if the business

LaDue describes himself as "a little ," as one might expect "a student of the history of ideas" should be.

Trent is spending her week at the University.
Thursday's presentation will highlight Trent's thoughts on the news, including TV documentaries, and why
she feels the news reflects a

Trent said her parents were the influences in her activist

In the early '70s, Trent set up drug crisis centers that she said were of people and
their problems than modern-day groups are.
Presently, Trent is considering working on a 10-part television series about the 10 Commandments for the

You can stand on the porch of the Solon house on a dim but otherwise moonlit night and know that this house

The council agreed to preserve the building on the strength of its design, and that it has been a
mainstay in the community."
Since then, owners and other community members have opposed it, saying the building itself -- proposed
because it was designed by
architect and University alumnus Max Abromovitz -- has nothing historical to offer to the city.

A bridge will allow passengers to easily walk to
the tracks to board their train, Volk said.
"It is an advantage to the public
because it combines transportation uses into a central location," he said.
Bill Volk, MTD director, said
ground will be broken on the 60,000 square foot center this fall and is scheduled to be completed in October or
November of 1998
He added that having all of these transportation sources in one location will be a convenience to the
public.
He also provided transportation for his employees. Before long he was carrying passengers.
In 1890 William B. McKinley, founder of the Illinois Power Company, directed the creation of an trolley system.
It is only that it be remembered
by naming the center piece of local transportation after it.
Signs will be posted at the old stop, and personnel have been telling regular customers about the move for several weeks, Newby said.
They created the Urbana Railway Company. It was operated with trolleys.
