People studying in a classroom   The Internet offers many resources for those who are studying English. The Internet resources on this page are divided by area of interest. In many areas, there are two different types of websites:
  • You will find websites with activities and information written for students.
  • You will also find authentic resources where you can practice reading or listening to texts intended for native speakers.

Concordance sites
A Concordance program is a computer program that can help you analyze the language that is used in real situations (example). This webpage has links to several places you can use these programs for free.

The English Learner Movie Guide
This website helps you prepare to watch well known movies by giving you a plot summary and important background and vocabulary. It does not have actual listening links, however.

Authentic Listening Sites

Welcome to NPR
National Public Radio home page for its programs. This is a list of all the NPR radio programs available.
WILL-am
U of I's radio station Focus 580 has archived radio segments that students can listen to online.
PBS Newshour
Most recent programs have both RealAudio and Video versions of their segments. There is also search engine for video segments, the link for the Newshour Transcripts
Pulse of the Planet
From National Geographic: These are short audio segments on cultural and scientific topics from around the world.
The EngineerGuy
Engineering and Life. A series of short listenings about the science behind every day objects. It also includes the transcripts.
American Rhetoric: The Power of Oratory in the United States
On this site, you can read and hear famous speeches both from American history and movies. It has an online speech bank, a section for the top 100 speeches, a section of movie speeches and one called "figures in sound" which has short audio clips from well-known speeches, movies, sermons, popular songs, and sensational media events.
The History Channel
Links to video and audio clips on a variety of historical events. There is also a great speech archive.
StoryCorps
Listen to real people tell stories about their lives and experiences.
Wired for books
This is a great site where you can listen to interviews with famous authors and readings of famous books, poems and more.
BBC Radio 4
If you would like to try listening to a non-American accent, try this British BBC Radio website.
CNN Video
This website has a variety of video articles on many different topics.
ABC News - 20/20
This website has video clips from a new magazine show on ABC.
Forbes News Network
This website has video related to business topics.
CBS News video
This website is associated with CBS and has video clips on a variety of topics.

This website has lectures on a wide variety of topics.
Learn Out Loud
This website has wide variety of free audio and video learning resources. Free audio books, lectures, speeches and much more.

As the name suggests, this site has free lectures and videos on a wide variety of science-related topics.
